Communication Is What Makes Temporary Work Feel Stable

Temporary hospitality work will always come with an element of uncertainty but communication is the key to helping. New venue, new managers, different teams and changing schedules, all have to be contended with.

What makes it feel stable isn’t removing that change, it’s knowing that when something shifts, someone will answer the phone.

Our staff love how we communicate

At Berkeley Scott, communication was rated 4.35 out of 5 in our latest Staff Satisfaction & EDI Survey, the highest score across all areas, with a 3.57% improvement year-on-year. Support when issues arise scored 4.3 out of 5.

Those numbers matter, but the real insight sits behind them.

One team member shared that they had to cancel shifts due to personal circumstances, yet were still offered work afterwards. That detail says more than any statistic. In hospitality, life happens. Travel delays, illness, family commitments — these aren’t rare exceptions, they’re realities. Knowing that one cancelled shift doesn’t mean the end of the relationship builds genuine trust.

For job seekers, responsive communication lowers risk. If a site changes, if a start time moves, or if something unexpected happens on shift, you don’t feel like you’re disappearing into a system. You speak to someone who knows your name, understands your circumstances, and works with you to find a solution.

For employers, that same trust creates reliability. Workers who feel supported confirm availability honestly. They communicate early if something changes. They’re far less likely to hedge their bets or withdraw at the last minute.

Hospitality runs on coordination. Rotas don’t hold together because bookings are made, they hold together because conversations happen.

At Berkeley Scott, we don’t see communication as an admin function. It’s the foundation of stable temporary work. And it’s something we continue to prioritise, invest in, and improve year after year.
