Surviving Christmas in Hospitality: A guide for Staff

Practical ways to protect your wellbeing and enjoy the festive period

Working in hospitality over Christmas is a unique kind of chaos. While guests are soaking up the atmosphere, seasonal menus, and sparkling decorations, the staff are the ones making sure it all runs smoothly. Long hours, constant movement, and high-pressure environments can easily lead to burnout. Here are a few ways to help keep your sanity and still try and enjoy the festive season.

1. Utilise your breaks
Breaks aren’t optional – they’re put in place for your wellbeing. No matter how busy you are, it’s so important to step outside, stretch, breathe or rest your feet. Whatever it is, those small pauses are what keep you sane through those high-pressure shifts.

2. Eat, sleep, hydrate
It might sound obvious, but it’s surprising how often the basics get overlooked when the festive rush takes over. Skipping meals, running on little sleep, or forgetting to hydrate can catch up with you fast. Even grabbing a quick snack or sneaking in some proper rest can make a world of difference to your energy and focus.

3. Celebrate your Way
Missing the ‘traditional’ holidays over Christmas? Create your own festive celebrations. Whether it’s a cosy film night, a little treat on your day off, a special day with family, or a seasonal get-together with friends, it’s important to enjoy the celebrations in your own way – even if it isn’t on the usual dates.

4. Lean on Your Crew
Your team isn’t just there to keep service running; they’re your support system through the busiest days. Having like-minded, relatable people around you can make even the toughest shifts feel manageable and more enjoyable. It’s important to share a laugh when things get hectic, make sure to help each other out, and take a moment to celebrate the small wins together.

Working in hospitality over Christmas is demanding, but with a few simple habits, you can get through the season without burning out and even find moments to enjoy it. It’s a challenging time, and it’s worth recognising just how much dedication and hard work goes into keeping everything running smoothly.
