The festive season is supposed to be all twinkly lights, family time, and cosy moments… but for a lot of people in hospitality, it’s also the busiest time of the entire year. While many of us are clinking glasses at Christmas dinners or taking time off from work, there are servers, bartenders, hotel staff, cleaners, baristas, and chefs making all that magic happen behind the scenes, often while missing time with their own families.
So, this year, a little extra kindness can go a very long way.
Most hospitality staff spend Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and all the days in between on the clock. It might be their third double shift in a row or the day they really wanted to be home baking cookies with their family. The least we can do is meet them with patience, grace, and a smile.
Kindness doesn’t need to be grand. A simple “please” and “thank you” genuinely boost someone who’s been on their feet for hours. And if things are a bit slower, or your drink takes a minute longer? It’s not because staff don’t care, it’s because Christmas crowds are no joke. Every person you interact with this season has their own life, stress, and festive chaos to juggle. A kind comment like: “Thanks so much for looking after us, especially on a busy day like this,” can completely turn someone’s shift around.
Now, this one can feel a little awkward, but here’s the gentle truth:Many Christmas meals or events these days are prepaid, and people often assume gratuity is included. Most of the time, it isn’t. If you can add even a small tip, it means the world to the staff who gave up their Christmas to serve yours. It doesn’t have to be big, just something that shows, “Hey, I see you, and I appreciate you and the work you’ve done.”
If someone gives you great service, tell them and tell their manager, too. Positive feedback is the best kind of Christmas gift. Who knows, your appreciation could help a seasonal worker score a permanent position!
The Christmas period can be magical, but it can also be exhausting, especially for the people working behind the scenes to make everyone else’s celebrations feel special. A smile, a kind word, a bit of patience, or an extra tip might seem small, but together they create a much kinder, more human festive season. As you’re out enjoying meals, events, and festive moments, remember the people who make it all happen.
