Supporting Menopause in the Workplace

Menopause affects around 50% of the population, with symptoms often starting between the ages of 45 and 55. Yet, despite its prevalence, menopause remains under-discussed, especially in the workplace. A healthcare provider, Simplyhealth, surveyed UK working women and found: 23% of women leave their jobs due to menopausal symptoms, with an astounding 87% of women wanting more support from employers.

Menopause is not just a personal experience; it’s part of life, and that includes work.

At Berkeley Scott, we believe in creating a supportive work environment. As a recruitment agency, we understand how important it is to recognise the impact menopause can have on individuals at work, both physically and emotionally. That’s why we’re committed to:

  • Raising awareness through menopause training for managers and staff
  • Creating a safe and supportive environment where employees can talk openly without judgement
  • Listening and responding with empathy and flexibility

Understanding and awareness can make a big difference, so we encourage all colleagues to be mindful and supportive. Supporting someone going through menopause doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers; sometimes it’s as simple as being patient on a tough day, offering flexibility when it’s needed, or just being there to listen without judgement.

If you think you might be experiencing symptoms of menopause, it’s a good idea to speak to your GP for advice and support. If you’re finding things difficult at work, don’t hesitate to reach out, whether it’s to your manager or HR, speak to whoever you feel most comfortable with.
