VisitEngland rounds-up some Shakespeare events

VisitEngland recently offered up a reminder that this year marks 450 years since Shakespeare's birth – and that destinations in various English locations are set to hold special events because of this.

The anniversary could well create an interest in local hotels in certain locations from fans of the playwright, famous for works from Hamlet to Romeo and Juliet.

He is traditionally thought of as having been born April 23rd, 1564.

Among the new Shakespeare-themed things to do that VisitEngland has picked out, one is the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This is an indoor theatre space close to Shakespeare's Globe.

It opened earlier this year and recreates a Jacobean style theatre, complete with lighting from candles.

Meanwhile, throughout much of this year, the V&A, also in London, is holding an exhibition called Shakespeare: Our Greatest Living Playwright.

It uses pieces from the collection of the V&A, as well as practitioner interviews and looks at Shakespeare's continuing influence.

Also in London, the Guildhall Library will be home to Shakespeare in Print, an exhibition, for the rest of this month (closed Sundays). It will display a First Folio – the famed historical printed collection of the Bard's plays produced in the wake of his death – and other printed exhibits.

Elsewhere in the country, Stratford-upon-Avon is home to an exhibition called Famous Beyond Words, held by The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – Stratford famously being the place the Bard was born back in 1564.

And, among other Stratford-set celebrations, a special event will be held April 26th and 27th which is expected to draw people in their thousands and will celebrate the King Lear scribe's anniversary.

Much activity is planned for the weekend, which will doubtless see people staying at local hotels to enjoy the fun.

People in public-facing hospitality jobs in hotels could help their customers by knowing a little about local attractions and events: a recommendation could go a long way in helping you add that extra level of helpfulness to service.
