Restaurant Group sees surge in sales

Restaurant and pub owner the Restaurant Group plc has announced a surge in sales this year.

The group, which owns brands such as Frankie & Benny's, Garfunkel's and Chiquito, saw sales increase by 8.25 per cent in the 43 weeks to October 28th this year, compared to the same period of 2011, while like-for-like sales were up 3.5 per cent on last year.

So far in 2012, the Restaurant Group has opened up 16 new sites across the UK, including the second establishment under its fledgling Coast to Coast restaurant brand, opened at The Gate in Newcastle in August, and a third Coast to Coast in Stevenage in October.

And with plans in place to open a total of between 26 and 29 new restaurants in 2012 as well as good pipeline of new sites for 2013, the Restaurant Group could be a major source of hospitality employment in the near future.

In a statement, the group said that since the end of August it has continued to trade strongly, with consistent like-for-like sales growth in both September and October, and that it is on track to meet expectations for the full year.

"[The group] has a distinct market positioning with strong brands and great value-for-money offerings and a superb pipeline of new sites," it said.

"We have an experienced and highly motivated team and a clear focus on delivering consistently excellent levels of service and hospitality. Our team is working to ensure that the group continues its profitable progress."

Meanwhile, pub chain JD Wetherspoon, which has more than 800 pubs across Britain, has announced a 7.1 per cent rise in underlying quarterly sales, compared to growth of 1.1 per cent in the corresponding period last year.

The group said that sales in the quarter – which covered the 13 weeks to October 28th – were significantly boosted by the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Reuters reports.
