This year, the managed sector has seen the formation of large pub companies through the acquisition of competitors. Consequently disposals & rebranding have been the key focus within the sector and synergy savings have affected the head count from middle management upwards. This has resulted in redundancies causing an influx of talent onto the market.

Similarly, in the tenanted sector, a series of significant acquisitions have resulted in the emergence of some key national players. Tenanted, leased & franchised pub businesses continue to be a growth area across the UK.

The on-going switch from managed outlets to tenanted or leased units continues to depress the earnings growth in this sector, as well as restricting candidate movement as a result of lock-in clauses and revised company structures. Consequently, these operations now require fewer managers and, in addition, area managers are frequently now seeing an increase in the number of outlets included within their regions. There has been a corresponding reduction in support function roles as well.

Competition for area management roles is fierce, due to the number of companies going through re-structuring processes and this in turn is impacting on the development of unit managers, who have concerns with regard to career progression opportunities.
