London attractions are unsurprisingly well represented in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice museum awards.
The National Gallery earned the title of the UK’s best rated museum in the awards, which base winners on an algorithm looking at TripAdvisor reviews from the past year.
The resultant top ten of UK museums saw the British Museum claim second place, in front of the Roman Baths in Bath, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the Churchill War Rooms (also in London) and York’s National Railway Museum.
At seven was the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, while eighth place went to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
The list – which, it might be speculated, could potentially result in people in hospitality jobs near these attractions seeing more custom for their employers – was completed by Brunel’s ss Great Britain in Bristol and London’s Natural History Museum.
Besides its top UK list spot, the National Gallery was sixth on the European museums chart and twelfth on the global chart.
“The National Gallery is extremely proud to be named the best rated museum in the UK in the Travellers’ Choice awards for Museums, announced by TripAdvisor. We want to ensure all our visitors have a great experience and that they really enjoy our collection of some of the best loved paintings in the world, so this is an accolade we relish very much,” said deputy director and director of public engagement at the gallery, Susan Foister.
The UK boasts the most Travellers’ Choice museum awards in Europe this year and has seven attractions in the top 25 for the continent.
“It is clear from the millions of reviews and opinions written by our global community of travellers that London remains home to some of the world’s best loved museums,” said James Kay of TripAdvisor.
He also added that a lot of the top ten UK museums cost nothing to visit, which makes them “an ideal choice of attraction for the wallet as well as the mind.”
Number one globally in the Traveller’s Choice museum awards was the Art Institute of Chicago, while number one in Europe was Russia’s State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace.
