McDonald’s announces 2,500 new hospitality jobs

Fast food chain McDonald's has become the latest restaurant to advertise a host of new hospitality jobs after a period of positive performance.

There have already been a number of new job openings announced across the UK since the start of 2013 and now the American burger giant has joined the party, offering as many as 2,500 new positions.

These will mainly be targeted at those looking to get a foot in the hospitality door, or first jobbers as they are known, especially those with a lack of experience.

It comes after the restaurant  posted results which showed an increase in sales across its US, European, Asian, Middle East and African markets, although the number of jobs posted this year is actually 1,000 fewer than in 2012.

Jill McDonald, chief executive of McDonald’s UK, said the business had managed to perform well despite the ongoing economic uncertainty in many parts of the world.

"These remain challenging economic conditions for everyone but together with our franchisees, our continued focus on serving quality, affordable food," she said.

"Whilst today’s job market is hugely competitive, we offer many people their first experience of work and we’re focused on doing what we can to help more young people get their first foot on the career ladder."

Following news from the Office for National Statistics yesterday that around million people between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of work, she added that these positions could help turn these figures around.

This could be done by teaching practical and attractive skills such as communication and customer service although, if jobseekers are to be successful in finding work with the firm, their applications will need to be impressive.

Ms McDonald said that for every job the company advertises it receives around 18 job applications, a rise from around 15 before the recession.

Interestingly, she revealed to the Telegraph that there had also been a rise in the number of family applications, which would see one partner work day shifts while the other does nights.
