Marriott International has launched a new culinary training academy in the UK that could be a major source of hospitality jobs for young people looking to start a career as a chef.
The Marriott Culinary Apprenticeship Academy is the first scheme of its kind to be launched in the UK by the hotel group and will 15 young apprentices trained to NVQ level 2 over an 18-month programme, with plans to increase the number to 30 the following year.
"With the youth unemployment figure in the UK at nearly one million, we recognise the need to open up opportunities to people and ensure they have the training and support they need to help them excel in their careers," said Bridgett Price, chief human resources officer for Marriott International in Europe.
The programme has been created in collaboration with the training provider Babcock, which Marriott hopes will ensure the apprentices receive the most up-to-date and relevant training possible.
Each of the apprentices who successfully complete the programme is guaranteed a position as a commis chef in a Marriott hotel in the UK.
"With exciting development and growth opportunities within our hotels in Europe comes the need for skilled people to take the hospitality industry forward," said Ms Price.
"The big drive for us is making young people aware of the opportunities we can offer and showing them that this is an exciting industry with real career progression."
The Marriott Culinary Apprenticeship Academy is the latest in a number of initiatives launched by Marriott in recent times to help young people find long-term employment.
This includes the launch of a pilot engineer apprenticeship programme in London, which recruited three young people to train and help find a career as an engineer within the hotel group.
Marriott has also signed up to the government's youth contract scheme, using it to find young recruits for its hotel in Scotland, and is currently working to expand this success nationwide.
