InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) has announced it is expanding the presence of its boutique brand Hotel Indigo in the UK and Europe.
The hospitality industry giant is to open a second hotel in Birmingham, having already launched an Indigo property known as The Cube in the city last year, as well as open its first hotel in Barcelona.
IHG's new Birmingham hotel – to be named Hotel Indigo Birmingham-Waterloo Street – will be located within the Colmore business district, encompassing the Colmore Row conservation area, home to some of the city’s most important landmark buildings.
It will feature 60 rooms and could prove to be a major driver of hotel recruitment in the city.
Meanwhile, the 77 room Hotel Indigo Barcelona-Plaza Catalunya will be located in the centre of Barcelona, moments away from Paseo de Gracia – one of the city's major shopping and business areas.
The Birmingham hotel will be managed by Rustic Pine Developments Limited, while the Barcelona property will operate under a 22 year franchise agreement with Empresa Casa de Lenguas.
According to IHG's chief development officer in Europe Robert Shepherd, the Hotel Indigo brand is proving popular with developers in Europe as the flexible approach to the hotels' designs make them ideal for conversion properties, which are easier to finance than new build properties, and can become operational sooner.
"Since introducing the brand to Europe in 2009, we've opened nine hotels – seven in the United Kingdom and two in Germany.
"As well as signing the Hotel Indigo Barcelona-Plaza Catalunya and Hotel Indigo Birmingham Waterloo Street, this year we've also signed our first Hotel Indigo in Wales, the Hotel Indigo Cardiff; our third in Scotland, Hotel Indigo Edinburgh-Princes Street; our fourth in Germany, Hotel Indigo Dusseldorf Victoriaplatz; and our first Hotel Indigo property in Israel, a 92-room hotel, which will open in Tel Aviv next year," he said.
