European hotel prices down, index shows

European hotel prices are down by 13 per cent, month on month, on average. Whereas a single night stay came with a price tag of £99 in October, that has been recorded at £86 this month.

The stats come from the trivago ( Hotel Price Index, and are based upon the 50 cities in the continent that are most popular on trivago.

Venice was home to the biggest price fall, from October's £194 to November £109 – a 44 per cent slip.

The next biggest drops were in Florence (which saw a decrease of 32 per cent), Rome (which saw a fall of 32 per cent), Barcelona (a 28 per cent drop) and Prague (down 26 per cent).

The numbers are based on how much it costs, on average, to book a standard double room for a night and are taken from searches made on a large range of booking sites.

The same method has been used to compile a list of the five cities in the UK which have seen the greatest hotel price hikes since November 2013.

Prices were up 20 per cent in Norwich, from a nightly £92 to £110, on average, while Leeds saw an 18 per cent hike, from £78 to £92.

Glasgow's increase was 16 per cent: November 2013's price here was £81, this month it was recorded at £94. In Birmingham, the hike was 11 per cent (from £76 in November 2013 to £84 this month), while in Bristol, a rise from £86 to £95 represents a 10 per cent price hike.

"This November might be the best month to visit Italian cities such as Rome, Venice and Florence – temperatures are much milder than the UK, crowds are less and hotel prices are significantly cheaper," said trivago's Denise Bartless.

"The same can be said for Barcelona, Lisbon, Athens, Seville and Bilbao. Paris is also worth mentioning – typically it is one of the most expensive European cities, but this month visitors can save an average of £41 in comparison to last month."

She added that European hotel prices are generally down year-on-year but UK prices are up significantly in the same timeframe, by six per cent on average in the country's 20 most popular cities.
