With its abundance of ice-cream shops, miles of beautiful coastline and historic sites to visit, Cornwall is where many Brits turn to when they are considering a staycation.
And it seems that people from outside the UK agree, as the region boasts two of the 2012 Travellers' Choice Hotels for Families in the Europe-wide awards, as voted for by TripAdvisor.
Britain took home two of the awards and both of those hotels are located in the south-west region – The Sands Resort Hotel & Spa in Newquay, which took the top spot, and Bedruthan Steps Hotel in Mawgan Porth, which came in at 12th place.
"With so many highly rated family-friendly hotels in Britain, including Europe's number one, it's clear that British families need not always look abroad for a truly great holiday," commented TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw.
A separate list of top ten hotels in Britain, as compiled by the travel site, put both of the Cornish hotels in its first and second spots. They were followed by Doric Hotel in Blackpool, Auchrannie Spa Resort in Brodick and Merton Hotel on the island of Jersey to make up the top five family-friendly hotels.
Malcolm Bell, head of tourism at VisitCornwall, said: "The awards are a magnificent accolade for the hotels and they should be immensely proud of themselves. Families love Cornwall for its stunning natural environment and great attractions, and with these amazing hotels families can be assured of quality in every aspect of their holiday."
The award-winning hotels may now be thinking of expanding to capitalise on their new accolades, in which case more people could be employed in hospitality jobs there.
Meanwhile, hotel-industry.co.uk's Hotel Supplier Survey 2012 has revealed that suppliers in the hospitality industry are feeling positive about the opportunities afforded to them by the recession, in particular the rise in popularity of the staycation.
This increased demand for accommodation in the UK for British tourists could result in more hotels being built and refurbished, resulting in more employment opportunities for those wanting hospitality work.
