A £4.8 million catering contract has been awarded by City of Glasgow College to Encore Hospitality Services.
Ultimately, Encore came out on top during a competitive process and it is now responsible for running all the catering outlets required for students and staff in existing buildings.
The company is the corporate catering and hospitality firm of Cordia, which was formed by Glasgow City Council to run its frontline services and there are hopes that the contract could lead to an upturn in catering recruitment.
As well as providing services within the college's existing buildings, Encore will be responsible for the catering with the outlets in the 'super campus' which is about to be constructed.
It has a good pedigree in offering catering services for colleges too, having been the primary provider at nearby Caledonian University, for the last 12 years, winning three successive contracts in the process.
The company claimed that the tender process involved "30 of the world's largest catering companies" and Cordia's managing director David Melvin said the contract was "significant".
"These companies brought their considerable resources to bear in a bid to take this work, and it is an outstanding achievement to have won it against such competition," he said.
According to Mr Melvin, the growth in catering at Caledonian University was 120 per cent over the course of their tenure, while he revealed the target for growth at City of Glasgow College would be between 30 and 40 per cent over four years.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to hiring local workers, saying the firm's mix of private and public operations was a positive.
"Our staff are Glaswegians, and we play a major part in keeping local people in employment, paying the city’s recognised Living Wage as a minimum requirement," Mr Melvin said.
It's estimated that Encore will deliver catering services to around 50,000 students and members of staff each day, across the two education contracts that have been awarded.
