BBPA to promote English Tourism Week

Tourist board VisitEngland and The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) are working together in a fresh collaboration for English Tourism Week, it has been revealed.

The Association represents pub companies and brewers and can track its roots back to 1904. Its members own about 20,000 British pubs and are responsible for 90 per cent of British-brewed beer.

The BBPA has promised to urge members to participate in the upcoming English Tourism Week 2015. This is an event running March 14th to 22nd next year.

During the week, timed to coincide with the beginning of the tourism season, tourism businesses can participate in a campaign to bring in more people to their businesses and give people inspiration to promote tourism in the place they live.

VisitEngland says that pubs provide a beacon for people coming to England as tourists, giving them "something uniquely English".

Pubs are commonly cited as a big attraction when it comes to holidaying in England, the tourism board adds.

“English Tourism Week is not only an opportunity to promote an industry worth £106 billion to the economy," said James Berresford, the chief executive of VisitEngland, referring to the tourism sector.

"But it’s also to a great way to get Britons thinking of England as their next holiday destination by reminding them what’s on their own doorstep," he added.

"I am delighted that The British Beer and Pub Association is on board and look forward to its members toasting the tourism industry in 2015."

Meanwhile, Brigid Simmonds, the chief executive of the British Beer & Pub association, said that pubs are "at the heart of" tourism in England.

They offer brilliant places to stay, entertainment and hospitality, Simmonds said.

"Pubs now serve around one billion meals every year and offer 50,000 rooms," the chief executive explained.

In past years, English Tourism Week has seen events such as baking contests, art shows and afternoon tea sessions.

Some ways that VisitEngland suggests pubs could take part include having a themed quiz or putting together a locally-sourced English menu.
